Research
A handbook that presents the key research findings and educational experiences from the STEMSiL project, exploring how sign languages can be effectively used to teach STEM subjects to deaf and hard-of-hearing learners. Developed in collaboration with Deaf educators, researchers, and linguists, it provides deep insights into bilingual STEM education, DeafDidaktik, and inclusive teaching strategies.
The handbook is available in two editions:
- full edition
- summary edition
Innovative methodology
A practical handbook that presents ten evidence-based recommendations for teaching STEM subjects in sign languages. It is especially useful for teachers, curriculum developers, and parents seeking concrete strategies to adapt STEM education to the diverse needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
STEMSiL platform
The online platform contains visual STEM glossaries in six European Sign Languages, accompanied by their corresponding written languages (German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, and English). It also features interviews with Deaf experts from the six participating countries, where they share their journeys in the STEM field, reflect on their educational experiences, and offer messages of encouragement to Deaf students aspiring to pursue careers in STEM.
In addition, the platform includes a practical handbook with 10 recommendations for teaching STEM in sign languages, offering valuable strategies for educators, interpreters, parents and curriculum developers.
STEM Labs
Explore the STEMSiL co-creation guide, which provides a concise framework to organize and implement inclusive STEM labs, featuring practical and collaborative activities tailored specifically for deaf students.
Complementing the guide, STEMSiL offers videos showcasing teachers from Spain, Greece, Germany, and Portugal. These educators share their thoughts on the importance of STEM for deaf children, the practical benefits of the STEMSiL platform in classrooms, and insights from their own teaching practices. Each video provides unique perspectives and captures real moments from STEM labs in deaf schools. Together, the guide and the videos empower educators and stakeholders to create engaging and effective STEM learning environments for deaf students across Europe.
